Processes and Mediums and more about Cheryl Quist
About My Painting Process
Oil painting offers me so much time for thoughtful work using the alla prima approach. I enjoy the luxury of this medium with its creamy mixes and heavy body. Marks made impasto are such a powerful statement, yet this medium offers incredibly ethereal aesthetics when passages are softened and blended.
Watercolour painting is my first love. There is something very exciting about laying down the washes, splattering, scraping, and watching the water move the pigment. Floral arrangements and cloudy skies are most likely to entice my watercolours out of the drawer.
I enjoy “painting from chaos” with acrylics and I often load my abstract images with symbolism related to the human experience. Painting then becomes spiritual, philosophical and meditative for me... my hope is that I’ve created a visual statement others recognize and identify with.
Memberships and Awards
I have enjoyed Active membership in the Federation of Canadian Artists since 2008. My works, including watercolours, acrylics, and oils, have been included in exhibitions in Calgary and Vancouver shows since then. Lift My Eyes (acrylic), Rudiger Ranch (oil) and Sun Dancers (oil) received honourable mention awards in FCA shows.
I've been active in the arts community in Lloydminster since moving here in 2012. During this time I've received a number of awards in the annual Arts Without Borders Juried show.
